Reaching the massive ice walls on foot requires planning and physical endurance. The lack of a direct road means hikers share the multi-use Knik River Trail with ATVs in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter.
How long is the hike to Knik Glacier?
The hike is about 8 miles one way, or 16 miles round trip.
Expect to spend four to eight hours completing the trek. You start at the end of Knik River Road near Palmer. The multi-use Knik River Trail follows the riverbed toward the glacier face. In summer, the trails can get extremely muddy.
Can you walk on Knik Glacier?
You can walk on the ice, but guided tours provide the safest access.
Independent hikers usually view the glacier from the shores of Lake George. Helicopter tours provide guided glacier walks and supply ice spikes. If you hike independently, do not approach the glacier face too closely. Sudden calving creates deadly waves and falling ice.

Can you fat tire bike to Knik Glacier?
Yes, fat-tire biking is popular during the winter months.
Between December and March, the Knik River freezes. Bikers use the frozen riverbed to reach Lake George. Winter travel requires extreme caution. You must watch out for fracturing surface ice on the lake, even when it appears completely frozen.
Do you need a guide to visit Knik Glacier?
You do not need a guide to hike the trail independently.
Access via the trailheads is free for hikers and bikers. However, the route is a remote backcountry area with limited to no cell service. If you prefer not to walk 16 miles, you can book an off-road tour that includes a guided hike.

Are there bears near Knik Glacier?
Yes, bears inhabit the Knik River Valley and surrounding Chugach Mountains.
Independent hikers must carry bear spray and know how to use it. You should also pack plenty of water, high-energy snacks, and mosquito repellent for summer visits. Respect private property boundaries near the trailheads.
What should I wear for the hike?
Wear warm layered clothing and sturdy waterproof hiking boots.
Temperatures at the glacier drop 10 to 15 degrees lower than the surrounding Palmer area. Pack a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Sunglasses are essential to protect your eyes from snow and ice glare.

Questions travellers ask
